11.07.06 - Notes From Emily
On November 17-19, 2006, thousands of people will converge on Ft. Benning, Georgia to protest the School of Americas/Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (SOA/WHINSEC) and speak out against oppressive U.S. foreign policy. I will be there to sing a song on Sunday the 19th and stand in solidarity with people here and in Central and South America who have suffered atrocities at the hands of graduates of the SOA/WHINSEC.
The SOA, based at Ft. Benning, trains Latin American security personnel in combat, counter-insurgency, and counter-narcotics. SOA graduates are responsible for some of the worst human rights violations in Latin America. Manuals at the school advocate torture, extortion, and execution. We gather together at Ft. Benning to issue a resounding 'NO' to our government's complicity in these atrocities, and we will continue to gather and protest until the school is closed down.
Please join me and all others present here and across the Americas. If you have never attended the protest at Ft. Benning, I know you will find it moving, inspiring and empowering. It has changed my life. If you have been before, then you know what you will experience. I urge you to join us again.
